Delete your account

You can delete your tally.place account and everything attached to it from inside the app, in about three taps. It is not a request that joins a queue — it happens while you wait.

How to delete your account

  1. Open tally.place on your phone.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap Delete account, and confirm.

Every pentagon you hold is retracted first, one batch at a time, so the public counts you contributed to go down as they are given up. Then the account itself is removed. If you have covered a great deal this takes a few rounds; the app repeats the request itself until it is finished, and tells you when it is.

When that has worked, the app empties the record on your phone and signs you out. You are left with the app as it was the day you installed it. If it does not finish — no signal, say — the record on your phone is left exactly as it was, and the app tells you so rather than leaving you to guess.

Deleting some of your data, without deleting your account

You do not have to choose all or nothing. In Settings → Private places, mark an area as private — your home, a friend's, a workplace — and every pentagon you have recorded inside it is withdrawn from the public record. The counts you contributed to go down. Nothing there is ever recorded again while the place exists.

The app tells you how many pentagons an area would withdraw before it withdraws them, because it cannot be undone. The area itself is kept with your account as well as on your phone, so it is still there when you change device, and it goes when your account goes.

That is the reason to reach for a private place rather than deletion if what you want is for one area to stop counting: marking it private withdraws what you recorded there and keeps the rest.

You can also stop contributing to the aggregate statistics at any time, from Settings, with one tap. Withdrawing is as easy as agreeing was.

What is deleted

Deleting your account removes all of the following, immediately and permanently:

WhatDetail
Your pentagon recordsEvery pentagon you have visited, and how many times. Each one is retracted, which decrements the public count it contributed to.
Your accountYour handle, and the identifier your sign-in provider gave us. Nothing remains that another sign-in could match you back to.
Your scores and statisticsTotals, rarity scores, streaks and milestones.
Your first-visit creditsWhere you were the first person recorded on a pentagon, that credit is given up rather than left pointing at a deleted account.
Your contribution to aggregate statisticsThe record that you were one of the people counted. See what is kept, below.
Any reports you filedReports that somebody lives on a pentagon and its counts should not be published.
Your invite codes and referralsBoth directions — codes you created, and the link between you and whoever invited you.
Your private placesEach area you marked private: a point, a distance around it, and the name you gave it if you gave it one.
Your device keysThe per-device keys used to check that a sync came from a real installation.
The record on your phoneNot ours, but it goes at the same time: every pentagon the app had counted, your private places, your milestones, and anything recorded but not yet sent. The app signs out and starts again empty.

What is kept, and why

WhatHow long, and why
Pentagon countsIndefinitely, minus your contribution. The counts are the game: once your visits have been subtracted, what remains is a number about ground, with no record connecting it to any person.
Aggregate statistics already publishedIndefinitely. Figures released before you deleted your account cannot be recalled. They carry no identifier of any kind, and they are coarsened before release — which is why permission for them is asked for separately, and can be withdrawn separately, before they are produced.
Nothing elseThere is no backup copy held aside, no soft-delete flag, and no grace period during which the account could be restored. Deletion is a delete.

Two things we never had to begin with

Your movements. Where your phone has been is converted to pentagon identifiers on the device and the positions discarded, so there is no trail of coordinates here to delete — there never was one. The one exception is an area you set as private yourself, which is listed above and is deleted with the rest.

Your email address. If you signed in with an email link, the address was used to send that one message and never written down. What is stored is a hash of it, which is deleted with the rest of your account.

Other retention periods

These apply whether or not you delete anything, and are listed in full inthe privacy notice §7:

If you cannot open the app

Deletion is built into the app because a right you have to ask for is a right with a queue in front of it. But if you have lost the device, or removed the app before deleting the account, write to privacy@tally.place and say which handle it is. You will not be asked for anything we do not already hold.

You can also read the full privacy notice, which covers what is collected, what is published, and what is never collected at all.
